Oh. Holy. Wow.

The bill. $10,454 ~faint~ I think that’s just the hospital, not including the bone doc. Thank gord for insurance!

Speaking of the bone doc, we have a standing weekly appt.. Abi went in last Monday and x rays showed the bones shifting. He said if they shifted any more, he’d have to go in and fix it again. This week, the ends weren’t even touching. :-(

I was afraid she’d need surgery and pins and... He wanted to try something first–he cut an elliptical shape out of the cast just below the crook of her elbow and gently bent her arm away from the cut (ow!)--the pressure of the cast below actually pushed the ends back together. Then he wedged some pieces of wood (trimmed by scoring with the cast saw…I told him we should work together, I’ll cut some nice oak to size for him ;-)) into the gap and wrapped the whole cast/wood combo in highlighter pink fiberglass. Very cool, though the wood is a weird lump.

Hmmm, maybe I should paint it into a pet rock or a frog on a log or something for her.

This cast is a serious pain in the ass. We got a waterproof cover for showers from the bone doc. Even though it's a child's large size, it's too small around for this monster, bumpy cast. We've taken to showering her every other day since it hurts us both to put it on. My fingers scrape against the cast as I struggle to hold the super tight rubber seal back, dragging it up her arm a half inch at a time. I have to anchor her hand area under my arm to have something to push against. The push and pull hurt her (can't be good for the bones :-( ) and the seal is like a tourniquet when it's finally on. She needs me to wash her hair, help with dressing, cut food, clean what little of her hand I can reach under the cast, etc.

Wait, isn't this a knitting blog? Who has time to knit?

Holy shit! At least her pretty pink top is color-coordinated with her cast. :) And her smile doesn't seem any worse for the wear which is a good thing because Abi has such a pretty smile.

Kisses to Abi, hugs for Mom

Oh, yikes!!

I broke my arm two or three years ago. My cast wasn't nearly so cool, though. When I showered, I just put a big, green garbage bag over it, twisted into a semi-tourniquet at top - much easier than trying to slither a cover over it.

Here's hoping for a complete and speedy recovery!!

Yeah, we tried the garbage bag before we got the cast cover. I could't get it tight enough not to leak. Even with using only the handheld shower, her cast got wet. Because of the bones moving so much, they can't change the cast and we're to protect it at all costs. Thus the hated cast cover.
