the end of a generation

My Grandma Heniser (mom's mom--though she was twice remarried [and outlived them all, plus all her siblings and friends], she will always be Grandma Heniser to me) passed away this morning. I lost both of my grandfathers (and Grandpa Heniser's twin brother) when I was eighteen. My Grandma Eastman (dad's mom) in 2000. They're all gone now. This saddens me more than Grandma's death on its own.

She was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2005 and was under-treated (oral chemo) because her doctors knew, at her age (84 at the time), more aggressive treatment was a greater risk to her health than the cancer. She was recently hospitalized with an acute illness. My mom was called to the hospital early this morning, Grandma was going into renal failure. Oddly, though she'd suffered some dementia the past couple years and seemed to have settled there with this latest illness, she was lucid and well for several hours this morning. Mom left to get something for Grandma and she was gone before mom got back. I'm so glad they had those hours this morning. And I am so very lucky to have had a grandparent in my life for as long as I have.

Goodbye, Grandma.

You're going to make me cry. I'm so sorry to hear of your grandmother's passing. I'll be lucky to have my grandparents for as long as you have and with as many memories.

You're in my thoughts always. :)

My heart is with you and your family. Grandmas are something terribly precious and you are very lucky to have had her in your life for so long.

Is she your inspiration for the cancer walks?

All my love xoxo
