Peeto's been so sad with Zoe gone. He's barely eating, doesn't want to go outside alone and sleeps with me most nights (not that I mind, especially with Peter gone so much, but he always slept with Zoe). I knew right away he was going to need another companion.
I've spent weeks searching petfinder.com, newspaper ads across the state, local shelters, not-so-local shelters...everywhere I can think. We even drove 180 miles to west side of Chicago in hopes of being first in line to meet a certain shih tzu mix puppy...we were third and the first folks snapped him up. I applied to a couple of rescues but their adoption fees for a young, small dog ($300-750??) seemed over the top. We were turned down by one, they said we had too many kids to give a dog the attention it deserved. Huh. If they'd gone as far as a home visit, they'd have realized how totally spoiled pets are in our home. And how I often like the pets more than the kids.
Finally, on Monday night, I spotted "Puppet" on petfinder.com.
Alex and I were at the shelter when they opened on Tuesday and found the pup was still there! We had to practically knock down two guys who slid through the doors from behind us but we asked to see her first and the shelter workers honored that. After spending some time with her in the visiting room, I'd already fallen in love. She is such a sweet pup, I can't imagine why her original owners never looked for her (she was picked up as a stray). We filled out the paperwork, paid the fees and all we had to do was wait for her to be spayed and pick her up on Thursday. I hated leaving her there, the big barky dogs scared her so. Later, we took Peeto in to introduce them. They were fine with each other.
Wednesday night, the kids were so excited that our new pup would be here when they got home from school, they could hardly fall asleep. Thursday morning, I busied myself around the house to kill time until the shelter opened at 11AM. Around 10:30, the phone rang. Bad news. Another pup at the shelter had been sick and was diagnosed with parvovirus that morning. The shelter is under quarantine until next Wednesday. Though Puppet wasn't directly exposed to that dog, there's still the possibility she could contract it. And, since Peeto could have been exposed as well, I took him into the vets yesterday afternoon for a booster. We are all trying to think positive.
All in all, yesterday was not a good day. My son, Dave, cut off part of his thumb when his utility knife slipped. He Super Glued it back on. The ER doc was not amused at having to pick all the glue off/out before sewing him up. He took a pic but it's pretty nasty. Click here if you're morbidly curious. Don't say I didn't warn you.
In knitting news...
I'm still slowly working on my March Project Spectrum socks.
These should be done and I should be moving on.
It's April, the colors are now yellow/orange. I don't like yellow or orange.
Maybe I'll make a couple dishcloths for April.
In the meantime, I'm happy putzing around with March still.
