the mother of invention

Hello? *tap, tap* Is anyone out there?

Yeah, I've been MIA for awhile. It's just been a bad time all around. My youngest daughter, Abi, was sick with the flu for a week and then hospitalized with pneumonia for another week. We're finally recovering from that.

I plugged along on the shawl and some spinning while sitting with Abi in the hospital. Decided I really need some sort of lazy kate (though I have a lazy Kait, she's not willing to help much) to ply my singles from. Hmmm...looked around to see what I could come up with.

Why do I have a pair of size 17 straights?? I don't remember buying them or ever using them. I don't like straights. And I don't like baseball bat needles. But I came up with a plan that includes them...and an empty box some gadget or another was shipped to my online shopper husband in (why does he leave all the boxes lying around?). And the "arms" removed from my PVC niddy-noddy.

I poked the baseball bats needles through the bottom of the box so the tips came out the top.

Then I wound my singles on to the arms of my niddy-noddy.

Slipped the PVC tubes over the ends of the needles and...

VOILA!

A perfect--cheap--lazy kate.

Now I just need to buy another length of PVC to cut into bobbins since three of the niddy-noddy's arms are in use. It's hard to use a niddy-noddy with no arms.

As long as I'm sharing, I don't think I ever posted about my needle organizing system...

See the clear binder on top of the stack of books (that's on top of the storage container of stash under my desk)?

That's my needle organizer. I'd show you the cover but there isn't one. Just a clear pocket for a picture or something. My twins are supposed to draw a cover for it. I put this together back in October. I'm still waiting.

In the front is a zippered cloth pencil pouch that I keep my tape measure, needle gauge and assorted other things in.

And then, there are clear vinyl zippered pouches that I've labeled with US and mm sizes of all the needles I have.

crappy picture but you get the idea

Except the interchangeables--in their own cases, straights--hidden away out of sight because I hate them, and my birch DPNs--in this pink capsule thingy I picked up cheap (around a buck) at Michaels (LOVE these things--I keep my crochet hooks in a purple one)

Pretty cool, huh? Now Em can easily find whatever of my needles she wants to steal borrow. It's a HUGE improvement over my old system...

Well, there ya go. I promise some actual knitting content/pics next time.

Oh, wait...could I ask for some baby hatching, easy labor and delivery vibes for our daughter in NYC? Our first grandbaby was due on 1/20 and we're STILL waiting. Daughter and her partner did not want to learn the gender ahead of time so I haven't been able to knit much for the little one. The suspense is killing me--how could they do this to me??

We're planning a weekend trip to meet the little one around mid-February. It's starting to look like we might be there before the baby.

Jiminy! Your daughter is 6 months late? That's a 15 month pregnancy! Hope she has the baby soon! (Sorry couldn't resist)
