Because...the knitter lady right here...
the one Em and I not only saw but actually spoke with (for a few fleeting seconds, while she signed my copy of Knitting Rules! and I wrote a check for Knitters Without Borders with hands shaking from hunger and heat--we left BC before lunch and without breakfast and there were a whole lotta knitters crammed in those [the room she was actually in filled up an hour before she was scheduled...the library put the overflow on the 4th floor with a large monitor] rooms with too little air flow) in Ann Arbor today? None other than The Yarn Harlot. She is funny. REALLY funny. Check her tour schedule. If she's going to be anywhere within 100 miles of where you are--go.
I tried to knit while Stephanie talked but it's hard to see when you're laughing so hard and have nothing to wipe the tears away. For a little while, I didn't think about how close we were to University of Michigan Hospital. Where my older son Dave is sitting beside his best friend Royce, who is comatose in ICU.
Royce Mullins is 23 years old. In the hours before dawn on Saturday morning, he drove into the back of a parked semi truck--going 70-75 mph. He's got arms and legs in traction, a cervical collar, tubes in his head for the bleeding in his brain, all ribs crushed--lacerating both his liver and spleen. I don't know about his lungs but he's on a vent. The doctors are making no prognosis at all.
Dave is just devastated. Royce lived with Dave and his dad for several years. They've been like brothers. Royce went on vacation with us in 2000 and then he and Dave helped me pack before the movers came to move us up here from OH. My kids are all hoping he gets better. I had to explain "coma" to Kai and Abi. We also got to talk about the dangers and stupidity of drinking and driving.
