No slacking here. I finished these Broadripple socks a few days ago (while listening to helicopters overhead hunting for the man who shot two policemen--killing one-- a few blocks from me. Things have been seriously freaky of late) They're not exactly my colors but I loved working with the yarn ( Elann's Sock It to Me Collection Esprit Print) once I got used to the stretchiness. I love it so much that I ordered a gazillion more skeins in all different colors, including "wine" to make Lolita Legs for my older daughter's best friend. I have about 1/3 of the first one done so far.
I got a little bored with footwear so looked for something else to start on. I had an idea for some simple little bags and started to make a sample. Abi spotted the purty purple yarn (some of the Russian angora/wool blend I doubled up) and fell in love. My sample thus veered off course, becoming "Abi's bag." She chose the yellow for the i-cord strap and also the blue button. I tried out my new (that I've had awhile but no chance to use them yet) felting needles to add her name. After endless stabbing and poking and prodding, it's at least legible.
Kait and I went out to run some errands this afternoon. We stopped in to Walmart to get some buttons. It started pouring while we were in there so we bought an umbrella. She took the umbrella to bring the car around. I heard a huge *crack* (seriously HUGE, one lady inside screamed it was so loud and close), looked up and there's Kait--standing right outside the store with her hand still up but the umbrella on the pavement. She was struck by lightning. *faint*
I was freaked, she was in shock but still standing. I called 911 on my cell and--got voice mail?? They did come but before that, a cop showed up and said it was impossible that she'd been struck because she'd be dead. The paramedics said she wouldn't necessarily be dead and it was lucky she was wearing those rubber sport sandal/slide things (that never stay on my feet, I'd have fried with my Birks on).
They did an EKG and BP check. Her hand feels burned and sore but on the inside. She said she saw black with weird flashes and her brain felt like it had been erased. She didn't want to go to the hospital and they released her. It was scary as hell.
One of the security guys (who was also talking to 911 while I was) offered to rewind the parking lot tape so we could see if the lightning strike was visible. A manager came in and stopped him.
If I'd thought about it being Friday the 13th, it wouldn't have changed anything. I'm not superstitious. Kait says Friday the 13th really is unlucky. But she walked away from a lightning strike. That's pretty damn lucky.
