I sat down to make the placket this morning and realized my plan was all wrong. Since height felts down more than width, it made more sense to pick up all the front (or back) edge stitches, knit several rows, bind off for the zipper opening and then cast those stitches back on and finish knitting to the opposite side. So that's what I did.
